Davis Media Access (DMA) serves the community of Davis, CA (population 65,000), and the surrounding areas of Woodland, Dixon and unincorporated Yolo County. As the only media center in Yolo County, DMA is increasingly called upon to provide technical advice, training and assistance for individuals and organizations in nearby communities Woodland and Winters, and even Dixon, in Solano County. While Davis is a university town, there are low-income populations within our city limits, and Yolo County as a whole has an unemployment rate of more than 15 percent. We serve unemployed and underemployed individuals, struggling non-profits, activists from DQU Native American University, senior citizens and a number of disabled individuals as well. There are a large-number of Spanish-speaking populations within Yolo County and we would love to increase our outreach to them. The number of household subscribers referenced above indicates Comcast subscribers. DMA's recah is much broader, as we also manage a Low-power FM station and host a wide variety of content online.
Supporting Vulnerable Populations
Please describe the specific affirmative steps that your program will take to engage and serve the groups identified:
Through existing networks (non-profits, schools, churches, service organizations, job training programs, and local and regional government) we would work to identify additional subgroups within communities served. Our outreach takes many forms: presentations, radio, TV, Internet, street team outreach via local businesses, one-on-one meetings, convening group meetings.
Please describe the ways your center will be accessible to people with disabilities and technologies will be used:
Our center is wheelchair accessible and is already used by many individuals with a range of disabilities spanning multiple chemical sensitivity, cerebal palsy and total paralysis. We accommodate and welcome caregivers for those who need onsite support. We schedule specific training/support times within our normal hours to support users with specific needs. We would set up a specific work station(s) to accommodate the public's access to equipment and information.
Do you offer, or plan to offer, multilingual training and outreach? If so, please describe and identify languages it will be in:
We can support a limited amount of Spanish-language outreach and produce materials in Spanish as well.
