Open Media Project Implementation at UPTV

The Open Media Globe

Urbana, IL at UPTV Headquarters - Tremendous excitement was shared all around as the Urbana’s UPTV became the first beta station to go through the Open Media installation process.  Tony Shawcross, Executive Director at Denver Open Media mentioned in his Idea Lab blog that there was great anticipation for the UPTV install from the start:

“[This station's enthusiasm] is one of the reasons we felt UPTV was such a good candidate for the program, with a great community of partners interested in the success of the project, we hope this effort will benefit the many noncommercial media organizations in town.”

Kate Gorman, station manager for UPTV, gave her perspective on the install, as well, noting that the Open Media Beta opportunity showed her "it would be possible for a system to grow with the station, meeting the needs I could imagine now and having the flexibility to meet the needs of the station in the future."  In an interview, Kate explained how the Open Media Project is beneficial to a station manager:

“It’s an idea that’s kind of different than what a lot of public access stations are run on. Most of the time, [stations] build up a lot of great equipment and qualified [staff], and people will come to them to make the shows and put their shows on the air. … With [Denver Open Media’s] model, they try to make it more possible for more people to be able to submit programming. But also to move some of the responsibility for keeping the station going and maintaining the community to the actual members of the station (the public).”
